The person driving this is me, and you, and anyone who buys a ticket. Calling for people to not be interested in it is puritanical garbage, and extremely impractical on nearly every count. Instead, keep paying coaches what the market will bear, let athletes major in football (If students are allowed to major in music, then they should be able to major in football) and continue the trend toward turning athletic departments into corporate entities affiliated, but no ruled by the university. This is sound economics, and has nothing to do with the fantasy scenario of universities firing English Lit professors to allow the football coach to get a raise.
This moment in cold economic sense brought to you by the Committee to Reform Bad, Hysterical Sportswriting: Doing the Opposite of Whatever Mitch Albom Does since 2005.
