"No, not every statistic has meaning which is exactly the point that sabermetricians make. In fact, part of the reason so many traditionalists get up in arms is that the sabermetricians are exposing their favorite statistics as meaningless or incomplete. And true, not everybody has to appreciate VORP or any other advanced metric in order to enjoy the game. But if someone is going to criticize the stats, he is obligated at least to know something about them, and if he is going to write an article attacking those who develop and use them in order to appreciate and understand the game more fully, more deeply and with greater admiration for its complexity and beauty, he has an obligation to represent what they are doing fairly and accurately and not resort to foolish stereotypes or curmudgeonly dismissiveness built on ignorance.
